What is Ashtanga yoga, who created it, and why is it popular?

Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, also known as classical Indian yoga, was popularized by K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century. Ashtanga refers to the eight limbs of yoga, with asanas (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing) being just two of them. Sharath Jois, K. Pattabhi Jois's grandson, encourages the practice of all eight limbs. The first two limbs, Yamas and Niyamas, are given special priority to be practiced in conjunction with the 3rd and 4th limbs (pranayama and asana). Ashtanga yoga has been named after the eight limbs of the yoga sutras of Patanjali.

Pranayama classes cover various techniques such as Kapalbhati, Shithkari, Bhastrika, Shithali, and Bhramari. Mysore-style classes on Saturdays allow learners to improve their practice without direct guidance from the teacher, although adjustments will be made if needed.

To be eligible for the course, one must have a sincere desire to learn and the discipline to attend all classes. A minimum of six months of recent Ashtanga or Hatha yoga practice is required. This intense experience helps develop a strong foundation of inner discipline.

Why Kerala For Your 200-Hour YTT?

Kerala — known as "God's Own Country" — sits on India's lush Malabar coast where the Western Ghats meet the Arabian Sea, an environment radically different from Rishikesh's Himalayan riverside. The state is the cradle of Ayurveda, with documented therapeutic traditions stretching back over 3,000 years, and that medical-spiritual integration shapes how we teach yoga here.

Our Kerala campus sits within reach of Varkala Beach's red-cliff coastline, the Alappuzha backwaters, and the Tiruvalla temple belt — sites you can visit on rest days. The tropical climate (24–32°C year-round, with humidity that softens early-morning asana practice) means most of your 200-hour training takes place outdoors or in open-air shalas. Sattvic meals here are South Indian: red rice, sambar, thoran, coconut chutney — distinct from the North Indian thali you'd receive in Rishikesh.

Kerala specifically suits first-time teacher trainees who want yoga deeply integrated with Ayurvedic body science from day one. Many of our Kerala 200-hour graduates pair their YTT with an add-on 5–7 day Panchakarma at partner clinics nearby to reset before flying home and starting to teach. The state's literacy rate (96% — India's highest) and tourist-friendly infrastructure also make it the easiest entry point for first-time visitors to India.

Setting

Malabar coast, palm-fringed beaches & backwaters

Local tradition

Birthplace of Ayurveda (3,000+ years)

How To Reach Tattvaa Yogashala Kerala

Airports, train stations, taxi logistics and local transport for your YTT in Kerala, India.

Nearest Airport

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the most convenient entry point at approximately 180 km from our Kerala campus. The drive takes around 4 hours by taxi, costing roughly ₹3,500 (~USD 42). Direct international flights serve Cochin from the Gulf, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia; from Europe or the Americas, transit via Dubai, Doha, Mumbai, or Delhi.

Trivandrum International (TRV) is an alternative at ~220 km (5-hour drive). Domestic travellers can also fly into Calicut (CCJ) at ~180 km.

Nearest Train Station

Ernakulam Junction (ERS) is the main rail hub, served by the Rajdhani Express from Delhi, Trivandrum Mail from Chennai, and direct trains from Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. From Ernakulam, a 3.5-hour taxi (~₹2,800 / USD 35) reaches our campus.

Smaller stations closer to the venue include Alappuzha (ALLP) and Kayamkulam (KYJ) on the Cochin–Trivandrum corridor.

Airport Pickup & Taxi

Pre-arranged pickup from Cochin (COK) costs ₹3,500 (~USD 42) and from Trivandrum (TRV) ₹4,500 (~USD 55). Confirm pickup at least 48 hours before arrival by emailing your flight details to [email protected]; drivers carry a placard with your name and the school logo at the arrivals gate.

For local rides during your stay, Uber and Ola are limited; we recommend using the school's recommended drivers or local taxi unions, which charge ₹200–500 for nearby trips.

Best Time To Arrive

Kerala is best visited October to March (24–32°C, low humidity). The monsoon season (June–August) brings heavy rainfall and can delay road travel; if you arrive during this window, allow extra buffer for taxi delays. Avoid late-night arrivals into smaller airports (CCJ, TRV) — connections to the campus are scarce after 10 pm.

I came to Tattvaa Yogashala Kerala straight after a stressful tech job and the contrast was immediate. The Varkala cliff-top morning asana, the Ayurvedic kitchen, the way the teachers wove Patanjali sutras into anatomy lectures — none of this felt like the watered-down YTT I'd considered in Europe. Booking the add-on Panchakarma after graduation was the right call. Recommended.

The 200-hour course in Kerala balanced rigour and warmth. We had Mysore-style mornings, philosophy in the open-air shala overlooking coconut palms, and the South Indian sattvic food was outstanding. Yogi Kamal's adjustments unlocked Marichyasana D for me after years of trying. I left with confidence to start teaching back in Osaka.

My 200-hour Ashtanga training at Tattvaa's Kerala campus exceeded everything I'd hoped for. The tropical Malabar setting, the dedicated faculty, the Ayurvedic kitchen feeding us thoran and red rice every day — it all combined into something far richer than a teaching credential. I now run my own studio in Madrid and still cook the sambar recipes I picked up from the kitchen team.
