There arose a question, what is Ashtanga yoga, who developed it, and why is it so popular?

K. Pattabhi Jois popularised the Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga in the 20th century, often called classical Indian yoga in the modern era. Ashtanga means eight limbs or components in which yoga asanas or physical yoga posture is merely one branch, and pranayama or breath is another. Sharath Jois, the grandson of K. Pattabhi Jois, encouraged the practice of all eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga. The first two limbs Yamas and Niyamas are given special priority to be practised in conjunction with the 3rd and 4th limbs (pranayama and asana). Ashtanga yoga has been named after the eight limbs of the yoga sutras of Patanjali.

The Pranayama classes cover various approaches like Kapalbhati, Shithkari, Bhastrika, Shithali, and Bhramari' Mysore Style practised on Saturdays where learners get a chance to improve their exercise without the teacher guiding them. Still, the teacher will be present to adjust the postures if necessary.

The eligibility for this course is a sincere desire to learn and the discipline to attend all the classes. Six months of recent yoga practice in Ashtanga or Hatha is a must. It is an intense experience that helps develop a firm foundation of inner discipline.

Ashtanga Yoga has several benefits for the body, mind, and spirit.

  • For your body: It helps develop strength and flexibility, lubricates joints, tones muscles, massages inner organs, releases chronic tension between them, improves circulation and rejuvenation, and helps with weight loss.
  • For your mind: Ashtanga Vinyasa helps calm restless thoughts, promotes inner stability, supports mental clearness, and encourages self-awareness.
  • For your spirit: Invites profound stillness, encourages self-acceptance, and observes inner wisdom.
