"Yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory" ~ Pattabhi Jois.
Tattvaa Yogashala's 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Japan brings the authentic Ashtanga Vinyasa lineage of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to one of the world's most contemplative landscapes. Japan's deep cultural respect for discipline, attention to detail, and reverence for nature make it a uniquely fitting setting for an immersive yoga teacher training. This program is designed for beginners and intermediate practitioners who want to build a strong foundation in Ashtanga yoga and gain the confidence and competence required to teach others.
Our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training course offers a comprehensive breakdown of Ashtanga Vinyasa primary series, pranayama, meditation, kriyas, alignment, and adjustments. Students gain a complete understanding of the physical, mental, and philosophical foundations of yoga while practicing in the calm of a Japanese retreat setting — a perfect counterpart to the rigour of daily Mysore-style practice.
This program is structured to meet and exceed the 200-hour standards set by Yoga Alliance (USA). On successful completion of our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in Japan, you will be a certified and qualified yoga instructor eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as RYT-200. You will be authorised to teach Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga anywhere in the world.
Our team of experienced Indian yoga instructors brings the unbroken tradition of Mysore-style Ashtanga to Japan, ensuring that every module — Yoga Asana, Asana Methodology (theory and adjustments), Pranayama and Meditation, Yoga Philosophy, Anatomy, and Ayurveda — is delivered with the same rigour as our Rishikesh flagship course.
Join us at Tattvaa Yogashala in Japan for an immersive and transformative 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training experience. Build the foundation of a lifelong yoga practice while gaining the skills and confidence to share this practice with students worldwide.
Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, also known as classical Indian yoga, was popularised by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century. "Ashtanga" refers to the eight limbs of yoga described in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, of which asana (postures) and pranayama (breath) are only two. The first two limbs — Yamas and Niyamas — are ethical foundations that pair beautifully with Japanese cultural values of discipline, simplicity, and respect. Our YTTC teaches all eight limbs, with particular emphasis on the steady, breath-led practice that makes Ashtanga so transformative.
Pranayama classes cover techniques such as Kapalabhati, Sheetkari, Bhastrika, Sheetali, and Bhramari. Mysore-style classes allow you to deepen your self-practice with personalised adjustments from your teacher — a method that suits the focused, self-paced learning style preferred by many of our students in Japan.
To be eligible for the course, applicants must have a sincere desire to learn and the discipline to attend every class. A minimum of six months of recent Ashtanga or Hatha yoga practice is recommended. This intensive month-long experience helps students develop the inner discipline and physical foundation that lifelong yoga practice requires.
Ashtanga Vinyasa offers a wide range of physical, mental, and spiritual benefits:
Japan offers a rare combination of natural beauty and cultural depth that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. The Japanese aesthetic of ma (mindful space), wabi-sabi (acceptance of impermanence), and kintsugi (beauty in repair) are natural companions to the yogic journey of self-acceptance and steady practice. Training as a yoga teacher in Japan immerses you in a culture that already values silence, discipline, and presence — qualities that yoga seeks to cultivate.
Our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training course in Japan is held in a peaceful retreat environment, away from the bustle of the city, where students can fully commit to daily practice and study. Japan's world-class transport links make it easy to travel to from across East Asia, North America's West Coast, and Australia. After completing the course, you will become a certified Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga teacher with international Yoga Alliance recognition — qualified to teach yoga anywhere in the world.
Tattvaa Yogashala's 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in Japan is structured for complete beginners as well as practitioners with prior yoga experience. If you have already completed a 200-hour Ashtanga YTT in any tradition, you may enrol directly in our 300-hour Yoga Teacher Training instead.
Our Yoga Teacher Training courses are held throughout the year. Please refer to the schedule below for upcoming Japan dates. On completion of our 200-hour Ashtanga yoga TTC in Japan, you will receive a course completion certificate from Tattvaa Yogashala — the same internationally recognised certification accepted across the Yoga Alliance USA network. This certification enables you to register as an RYT-200 and teach yoga anywhere in the world.

A 200-hour Ashtanga YTTC is a Yoga Teacher Training Course focused on Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, covering 200 hours of structured training in line with Yoga Alliance standards. The course includes asanas, pranayama, meditation, philosophy, anatomy, teaching methodology, and other related subjects.
Japan offers a peaceful, well-organised retreat environment that pairs naturally with the discipline of an Ashtanga practice. Many students who live in East Asia, North America's West Coast, or Australia find Japan easier to travel to than Rishikesh. The teachers, curriculum, and certification are identical to our Rishikesh flagship course — only the location and cultural context change.
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Citizens of many countries can enter Japan visa-free for short stays that cover the full course duration. We strongly recommend checking the latest requirements with the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country before booking flights. We are happy to provide an enrolment letter to support your application if needed.
Yes. On successful completion of the 200-hour course you will receive a Tattvaa Yogashala certificate that makes you eligible to register with Yoga Alliance USA as RYT-200. This certification enables you to teach yoga anywhere in the world and to enrol in advanced 300-hour or 500-hour YTTC programs.
The course is taught entirely in English. No prior knowledge of Japanese is required to attend — our cohort is typically international, with students joining from across Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia. A basic conversational level of English is sufficient to follow all lectures and practical classes.
Comfortable retreat accommodation and sattvic vegetarian meals during your 200 Hour YTTC in Japan.
Airports, Shinkansen routes, transfer logistics and seasonal advice for your 200 Hour YTT in Japan.
Most participants fly into Narita International (NRT) or Haneda International (HND) in Tokyo. Haneda is closer to central Tokyo (~30 min by Keikyu Line, JPY 410). Narita is further out (~60 min by Narita Express, JPY 3,070).
Travellers connecting via western Japan can also use Kansai International (KIX) near Osaka as their gateway (~80 min by HARUKA Limited Express to Kyoto, JPY 3,640). Travellers from Europe or the Americas commonly transit via Tokyo and continue by Shinkansen.
Japan's Shinkansen bullet trains are the most efficient long-distance transport. Tokyo to Kyoto takes 2 hours 15 minutes (JPY 13,920). A Japan Rail Pass (7/14/21 day, from JPY 50,000) is excellent value if your stay includes excursions to other cities.
Local transit in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka uses IC cards (Suica, ICOCA) loaded with credit. Taxis are reliable but expensive — use them only for short trips with luggage. Most retreat venues are walkable from the nearest train station.
Private airport or station transfers to the retreat venue can be arranged on request. Send your final-leg train or flight arrival time at least 72 hours in advance to [email protected] and our team will share the available options and current pricing.
Visa requirements: most western passports get visa-free entry for 90 days. Indian, Chinese, Filipino, and Vietnamese passport holders should apply for a tourist visa through their nearest Japanese embassy or consulate before travel — we are happy to provide an enrolment letter to support your application.
Spring (late March – mid-April) brings cherry blossom (sakura) and 12–20°C days — Japan's most popular travel window. Autumn (October–November) offers vibrant maple foliage and 10–20°C, equally beautiful and less crowded. Summer is hot and humid (28–35°C); winter is dry and cold (0–10°C) but ideal for hot-spring (onsen) excursions. Japan Standard Time is UTC+9 — no daylight saving.
