Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, also known as classical Indian yoga, was popularized by K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century. Ashtanga refers to the eight limbs of yoga, with asanas (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing) being just two of them. Sharath Jois, K. Pattabhi Jois's grandson, encourages the practice of all eight limbs. The first two limbs, Yamas and Niyamas, are given special priority to be practiced in conjunction with the 3rd and 4th limbs (pranayama and asana). Ashtanga yoga has been named after the eight limbs of the yoga sutras of Patanjali.
Pranayama classes cover various techniques such as Kapalbhati, Shithkari, Bhastrika, Shithali, and Bhramari. Mysore-style classes on Saturdays allow learners to improve their practice without direct guidance from the teacher, although adjustments will be made if needed.
To be eligible for the course, one must have a sincere desire to learn and the discipline to attend all classes. A minimum of six months of recent Ashtanga or Hatha yoga practice is required. This intense experience helps develop a strong foundation of inner discipline.
Ashtanga Vinyasa offers a range of physical, mental, and spiritual benefits:

To give your mind some exercise, here is some recommended reading to get you prepped and inspired.
Goa offers a coastal yoga setting that's the polar opposite of Rishikesh's spiritual mountain town. Our beach-adjacent campus in North Goa puts you between Arambol, Mandrem, and Morjim — a stretch of Goa where yoga and wellness have been the dominant culture since the 1990s. Sunset asana on the sand at the end of the day is part of how we teach here, and it's a setting that suits first-time YTT students who want classical Ashtanga without the intensity of Himalayan altitude.
The state's Portuguese colonial heritage (Goa was a Portuguese territory for 451 years) gives the architecture, food, and place names a distinct flavour: white-washed churches, blue-tiled cafés, and Konkani-Portuguese vocabulary still in everyday use. This international, mixed-influence environment makes Goa easier on first-time India travellers than Rishikesh, while still keeping you in classical Indian yoga lineage with daily Mysore-style practice and Sanskrit-rooted philosophy classes.
The climate is tropical maritime — 24–32°C with consistent Arabian Sea breeze — and the daily schedule shifts accordingly: practice begins at 7:00 am (an hour later than Rishikesh) to make the most of the cooler beach window. Off-mat excursions include Old Goa's Basilica of Bom Jesus, the Saturday Anjuna flea market, and dolphin-spotting boat trips from Morjim river mouth.
Tropical coastal, 24–32°C; monsoon June–September
North Goa beach belt: Arambol, Mandrem, Morjim
Portuguese-Indian heritage, international wellness hub
Anjuna market, Old Goa churches, river dolphin trips
Airports, train stations, taxi logistics and local transport for your YTT on the Goan coast.
Goa has two operational airports. Manohar International Airport (GOX) at Mopa in North Goa is the closest to our beachside campus at ~50 km (a 1-hour taxi costing ₹1,800 / USD 22). It is best for international and long-haul connections.
Dabolim Airport (GOI) in South Goa is ~65 km away (1.5-hour taxi, ₹2,200 / USD 27). Choose Dabolim if your flight connects via Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Hyderabad on domestic carriers like IndiGo or Air India.
Thivim (THVM) is the closest mainline station for our North Goa venue at ~20 km (a 35-minute taxi, ~₹800 / USD 10). The Konkan Railway connects Thivim directly to Mumbai (12 hours), Pune, and Mangalore.
Madgaon Junction (MAO) in South Goa is the main rail hub, well-connected to Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata — but it's a 2-hour drive (~₹1,800) from our campus.
Pre-arranged pickup from Manohar/Mopa (GOX) costs ₹1,800 (~USD 22) and from Dabolim (GOI) ₹2,200 (~USD 27). Confirm pickup at least 48 hours before arrival by emailing flight details to [email protected].
Within Goa, scooter rental is the most popular local transport (₹300–500/day, requires international licence). Local taxis (no meter; negotiate before boarding) are widely available; Uber and Ola operate but coverage in North Goa is patchy.
Goa's prime YTT season is November to February (24–30°C, low humidity, no rain). Shoulder months October and March remain warm and dry. Avoid June–September monsoon: torrential rain, beaches inaccessible, and many beach shacks closed. Goa's two airports both accept night flights, so late arrivals are manageable.
Yogic Food and Accommodation like Environment at Tattvaa Yogashala in Goa, India
Tattvaa Yogashala is an international yoga teacher training school with Yoga ashrams in India.
Sunset asana on Mandrem beach is something I'll remember forever. The 200-hour was rigorous but the coastal setting made the intensity bearable. South Indian coconut breakfasts, sea-breeze meditation, and the Saturday Anjuna market trip during our rest day — a perfect introduction to India for someone who doesn't do Himalayan altitude.
I picked Tattvaa Goa specifically because I wanted a YTT close to the beach. The teachers integrated coastal walking meditation into our daily routine and the open-air shala overlooked the surf. Yogi Kamal's Mysore-style adjustments and Sunil-ji's pranayama in the evenings were transformative. Highly recommend the Goa cohort.
An excellent, well-structured 200-hour course whether you plan to teach or just deepen your practice. Yogi Kamal and the Goa faculty are highly experienced and exceeded my expectations. The Arabian Sea breeze through the open-air shala and the Mandrem sunset sessions made every day feel grounding. I definitely recommend Tattvaa for 200-hour Ashtanga YTTC in Goa, India!
